NSS Florida Chapter Meeting Minutes from 1/11/05

- Unfortunately, many of our active members are at the ASTWG/ARTWG conference in Colorado Springs, CO this week.
- Letter writing campaign over.
- KSC Visitor Complex not interested in holding a concert for Return To Flight. Will try for concert during Florida Space 2005 in November because KSC VC will be hosting entire event.
- The White House has issued a new space transportation policy that calls for increased private sector investment. It can be found at http://www.ostp.gov/html/SpaceTransFactSheetJan2005.pdf
- The Coalition for Space has asked our chapter to host Congressman Tom DeLay sometime for a fundraiser dinner because we are an independent organization. Jack to fact-find.
- The Coalition for Space also asked us to look into hosting a NASA VIP/Press Off-The-Record dinner event for Return To Flight. Jack to fact-find.
- David Kruhm will try to attend the International Space Development Conference (ISDC) 2005 is sponsored by NSS and will be held in Washington, D.C. May 19-22. Maybe some others can go, too.
- Reminder: National Space Symposium will be held April 4-7 in Colorado Springs, CO and is managed by Space Foundation.
New business
- Discussed just what to do for RTF. Focusing on something at the KSC Picnic. Perhaps have a booth and sell NSS t-shirts at cost. Carol to get pricing. Also talked about possible “Go For Launch” green wrist bands in partnership with the Coalition for Space. Sell? Give away? Take to schools and give away? More to come.
- Discussed increasing membership. David Kruhm will take the lead on the KSC Daily News emails.
- Discussed better meeting day/time. Decided to move chapter meetings to 2nd THURSDAYS of the month at 5:00 p.m. Following meetings with speaker. Find an appropriate place to have them. Jack to find location. Perhaps BCC. Jon Cowart agreed to talk about Cassini at next meeting.
Action Items (bold = urgent)
- Jack – sponsor $1,000 scholarship to ISU.
- Sue – plan on how to support Space Day in Tallahassee 3/24
- Sue – think of fun monthly speaker topics, locations, etc. for general meetings
- Jack – ambassadors plan
- Jack – Look into plugging into KSC All-American picnic for RTF. Booth? T-shirts? Green wrist bands?
- Carol – fact-find on wrist bands and T-shirts.
- Jack – Congressman Tom DeLay event?
- Jack – NASA VIP/Press event?
- Matt – look into free copies of Solar Quest.
- Jack – Get with Al Koller for availability of BCC Planetarium for meetings.
- Jack – Organize next meeting, get refreshments, Jon Cowart to speak on Cassini

- Jack – long term mission for chapter is to foster more customer friendly Range
- Jack – define chapter involvement in NSS HQ school competition.

Next meeting Thursday February 10. 2005 at Brevard Community College Planetarium (pending approval). Board meeting at 5:00 p.m. Cassini presentation for all members and guests at 6:00 p.m. Refreshments provided.
