Minutes, Tuesday, August 12, 2008 Meeting

Meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m.

1. ISDC 2009 in Orlando

NSS Florida Space Coast chapter is hosting the NSS 2009 International Space Development Conference and this was our main topic.
May 5-10, 2009 (pending possible date change)
Location: Omni Orlando Resort at Champion’s Gate. This is a brand new hotel with its several 18-hole golf courses and wonderful amenities. Rooms are $145/ night.

The dates may move to accommodate hotel requirements. We are seeking an internet sponsor and other sponsors. Chris is our graphic design lead. We expect 1000-1500 attendees. A large focus is for families to do their vacations in Orlando while also allowing attendance at ISDC. This is facilitated by the large suites at our hotel.

2. August 20, 7:00 p.m., BCC Planetarium, Meeting of Brevard Astronomical Society. Tim Bailey will be discussing NSS at this meeting.  This will be preceded by a supper at a Chinese buffet in Rockledge. BAS monthly meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at the BCC Planetarium and Observatory in Cocoa, FL. Meetings begin at 7:00 pm and are conducted inside the Planetarium. Our meetings are both informative and enjoyable, with a mix of informal discussions of recent observing sessions, which sky objects are currently viewable, and structured presentations by a featured speaker on an interesting topic related to astronomy. Visitors are always welcome to attend!

3. September 26, Delta-IV Heavy Launch from Cape Canaveral

4. October 8: Shuttle Launch Viewing at Space View Park in Titusville
Event: Space Shuttle STS-125 Launch, Hubble Servicing Mission
Location: Spaceview Park, Titusville, due West of Launch Complex 39

5. October 11, WOW! That’s Engineering! at Bayside High School, All Day, Society of Women Engineers

6. October 23, Omega Envoy, Florida Team for the Google Lunar X-Prize.
They recently had a grand announcement at KSC and have a kickoff meeting planned for October 23 at the Astronaut Hall of Fame. The nonprofit group behind this is Earthrise Space, started by UCF students. Florida Space Institute can help them contact/recruit new team members. Not an official team yet.

7. October 24th, NASA 50th Anniversary Gala at Udvar-Hazy Center in Dulles, VA
We may arrange a caravan to go attend this celebration organized by the AIAA.

8. October 28-29, NASA 50th Anniversary Event at NASA HQ

9. October 28-30, Lunar Conferences at the Raddison

10. November 7-9, NASA Space and Air Show will be on the causeway.  The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation will host an astronaut autograph show at the KSC Visitors Center.

14. Titusville Space Town Hall, August 13
Titusville recently hosted a space town hall with Congressman Tom Feeney, NASA Director – Bill Parsons, President of Space Florida – Steve Kohler, Titusville Mayor – Ronald Swank, Consultant – Frank Dibello, Chairman of Florida Aviation Aerospace Alliance – Marshall Heard, and Commissioner Truman Scarborough.
