Updates from Jack, August 18:

Dear Yuri’s Night Team,

Tim Bailey and I had a great meeting with Jason
McKee at the Cocoa Beach Hilton on 8/17. They
want to do the Cocoa Beach Yuri’s Night Event
there, no ifs ands or buts. We have scoped it
out somewhat (below). Jason will handle several
things including coordination with city/county
for permits, several sponsors (for $ and
giveaways), some publicity, banners, vendors,
etc. etc. Next step is to scope it out further
and make a cost estimate. Then, Tim and I will
go back to Jason and ink a deal. Tim is very
saavy about horsetrading things like guaranteed
rooms for lower rates for the ballroom. Also, I
took a shot at various positions for you all to
fill on the team. So, please comment to the
scope below and please volunteer to serve in one
or more positions. Let me know if you have other
friends who might want to help. This one is
going to be awesome! I will soon set up weekly
Thursday lunches in HQ cafeteria for those who
are able to have a quick weekly tag up. Need to
then soon have weekly team meetings/telecons
after work. We all have day jobs, so dividing
and conquering the work and having excellent team
communication will be the keys. Thanks everyone.

Update from Jack, Sep 7:

Dear Yuri’s Night Cocoa Beach 2008 Team,

I am very pleased to announce that Mr.
Christopher Reeves has agreed to be the overall
team lead. Please dive in and be an active
member on his team. I am stepping way back to
watch y’all make it happen. It really needs to
be a 20-something all night rave type of
event. Been there, done that…in the 80’s! I am
always available to provide guidance and sponsor
connections. I think the day time beach party at
Lori Wilson Park transitioning into an evening
party at the adjacent Cocoa Beach Hilton pool
deck is a very workable plan. I also recommend
you not use work email and transition to using
the existing yahoo distribution
list: NSSFL@yahoogroups.com. The homepage can
be used to post information, too. Please go to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NSSFL and click on
“join this group” in the upper right. There are
26 people in this list. Some of you have already
added yourselves to the list I know. Well, about
7 months to Yuri’s Night Cocoa Beach 2008. It
will be awesome. For information on Yuri’s Night
go to http://www.yurisnight.net Pictures from
lots of world-wide 2007 events including our

Jack

Dear fellow present and future space travelers,

Tim is out of town this week [second Tuesday
week] and we’ll have a special meeting day for
September only. Looking at Thursday, September
20th at TBD location. Probably at Port Canaveral
somewhere. Follow up message as soon as we can. Thanks.

[Also, Fred and I had a super time today at the
National Space Club luncheon at the DoubleTree
Hotel in Cocoa Beach. Heard Pat Duggins speak
about his new book on the Final Countdown for the
End of the Shuttle Program. Fred bought the
book. I'm too cheap. We also "networked" with
other space professionals. I learned that
Richard Nixon made his "I'm not a crook!" speech
at the Contemporary Hotel at Disney.]

Dear NSS Florida Space Coast Members and Friends,

National Space Society Florida Space Coast Chapter
Minutes and Notes, Tuesday, February 13, 2007 Meeting

Time: 5:00

Location:
Paddy Cassidy’s
Cocoa Beach, FL

Attendees:

Fred Becker, Secretary
Robert Driscole, Sergeant At Arms
Jack Fox, President
Ross Tierney

Meeting called to order at 5:00 p.m.

MOST IMPORTANT ITEM: We need a few thousand NSS membership brochures
by March 10 for use at the KSC picnic.

1. The annual report to HQ has been filed, summarizing our 2006
activities. All chapters must also file for an individual employer
identification number as a non-profit entity.
Action: Fred to file with IRS for EIN.

2. Next event: KSC Annual Picnic: NSS Florida to promote NSS to
thousands of KSC employees and families.
Date: March 10.
Time: 10-4 (Setup Friday in advance)
Location: KARS Park.
Link: http://kscpicnic.ksc.nasa.gov/index.html

Jack is buying us a canopy to go with our table and chairs. We will
have our canopy set up near other organizations at the picnic. We’ll
be handing out Ad Astras and membership brochures. Jack also has 100
Astronaut Farmer mini-poster and kid activity books that we can hand
out. The picnic is providing a table and 3 chairs. We have Fred and
Robert available so far to help man the table. We need two more
volunteers. If you can participate, please let Jack know. We also
have a request in to NSS headquarters to send us 2000 membership
brochures for use here and in the future.

3. Monthly Members Meeting, March 13
Location: Paddy Cassidy’s
Time: 5:00 officers, 5:30 members and guests

4. Titusville Air Show, March 16-18. Fred contacted the airshow and
determined that their booths go for $400, but they would let us have
one for $200. Due to our other activities and the cost of this, we
are passing on this opportunity. Update: now that the Shuttle has
slipped to March, this is more feasible, however there are no more
booths available and no space for our canopy.

5. Yuri’s Night: NSS Florida to participate in worldwide space
celebration of the first space flight.
Date: April 12
Time: 6:00
Location: Paddy Cassidy’s Irish Pub, Cocoa Beach
Link: www.yurisnight.net/

Option 1: Titusville city event was discussed. We don’t know the
city fees for this. Spaceview Park in concert with Astronomy Club,
HAM club. Combine three popular draws: food, music and
sports. Bands: Max Q, local space folk singer. Astronaut signing.
Option 2: Paddy Cassidy’s. We decided to go with Option 2. Items
to bring and provide: stickers, T-shirts, CD’s, posters. Webcam and
internet access will link us to the online Yuri’s Night worldwide celebration.
Action: Add a link from our home page to Yuri’s Night (if not
already present).
Action: Ross will provide a model to be raffled with proceeds going
to our chapter fund.
Action: Ross to coordinate in-house fliers and posters for Yuri’s
Night. These are created by Paddy Cassidy’s.
Action: Ross to establish setup for wireless internet.
Action: Jack to donate $50 to buy items to auction for chapter
benefit. Possible items: gift certificate, something unique to KSC,
space related.
Action: Robert to do publicity in Florida Today and The Resident.
Action: Chapter to sponsor food for 30/35 people with a $50 budget.

6. STS-117 Launch: NSS Florida to promote NSS to hundreds of launch
viewers at Spaceview Park.
Date: April TBD. The date has slipped from the planned March 15 launch date.
Time: TBD
Location: Spaceview Park.
Action: request Ad Astras. Info: we currently have 1000 Ad Astras
for our use. Followup: We requested another 1000, plus membership brochures.

www.lisats.org/

Resource sites:
http://spacelaunchinfo.com/

7. Future Speaker Meeting at BCC.
Action: Tim to continue to discuss options with BCC. Can use either
a Library Room or the Planetarium. This is a perfect location for
NSS Florida Space Coast.

www.brevardcc.edu/planet/

8. NASA 50th Anniversary in 2008

Our chapter hopes to participate in festivities for KSC’s observances
of NASA’s 50th anniversary. There will also be an event to start
this off, called the World Space Expo, Nov 3-11, 2007.

http://www.worldspaceexpo.com/

9. ISDC 2009: NSS Florida Space Coast to bid on 2009 International
Space Development Conference
Our chapter plans to place a bid to host the ISDC 2009
conference. We discussed theme ideas, speakers, organizations and
locations. Our current thinking is to have it in Orlando, with a
theme of Space Tourism and Youth Activism. The 2006 conference was
in LA. 2007 is in Dallas. 2008 will be in DC. If we succeed, we’ll
host the event in Orlando in 2009. Jen has written a preliminary
proposal. Fred has found a convention service company that can
arrange optimum rates.
Action: Fred to contact Brett Silcox with information about the
convention service company. Update: Fred has left a phone message
and will email the information.

10. NSS Membership brochures at KSCVC.
We are progressing with logistics and will soon have NSS membership
brochures available to all the visitors at the KSC Visitors Center.

13. Web Site Migration - Rick Fischer is planning to take over our
chapter web site. Thank you to Bob Waterman for a superb job of
creating and maintaining our site up until now. We hope to feature a
continually updated local space events calendar to draw visitors to our site.

14. Treasurer - Jen is moving ahead with getting the treasury set up
for our use.

15. Banner - We need to have a new banner printed or find a way to
repair our banner. The printed artwork layer has separated from the
backing layer in several places due to being stored rolled. It is
useable until we find a solution.
Action: Ross to coordinate this? Tim has the banner and Fred can
deliver to Ross. The banner is useable as is, but it would be good
to have it repaired in time for the March 10 picnic.

16. Future Events Calendar:

March, Delta IV Heavy Launch

March 10, KSC All-American Picnic at KARS Park

March 13, Paddy Cassidy’s, chapter internal meeting.

January 9, 2007 · No Comments

Dear NSS Florida Space Coast Members and Friends,

National Space Society Florida Space Coast Chapter
Minutes and Notes, Tuesday, January 9, 2007 Meeting

Time: 4:30

Location:
Shuttle’s Bar and Grill
Merritt Island, FL

Attendees:

Jen Bailey, Treasurer
Tim Bailey, VP
Fred Becker, Secretary
Brad Byron
Robert Driscole
Brian Lilley from Hershey, Pennsylvania

Meeting called to order at 4:50 p.m.

Agenda:

1. General topics discussion.

The meeting began with a general discussion of
current space events–the recent Shuttle mission,
upcoming space conferences and events in the
area, future launches, the recent news about
youth space interest levels, the Gemini 12 crew
reunion event in December at KSC.

2. Recap of December meeting at the STS-116 launch.

We had a successful activity in December with our
table at Space View Park in Titusville during the
launch attempt and subsequent night launch of
STS-116. We handed out about 400 copies of Ad
Astra and a comparable number of custom printed
inserts and NSS membership brochures. The
brochures were coded with our chapter code, so we
hope to later receive results from headquarters
as to the percentage of people that join NSS from
this event. Brett Sillcox from NSS headquarters
was able to visit us during the launch event and viewed the liftoff with us.

3. February 13, Brevard Community College
Library Room or Planetarium, speaker meeting

Our chapter needs to move into high gear to find
a suitable speaker and arrange with Brevard
Community College to host an event there on Feb
13. Once this is arranged, we will work together
to get our event published in community calendars
such as: Florida Today’s TGIF, Florida Today’s
“Things to Do,” About Me, North Brevard Beacon,
Space Coast Chronicle, The Beachside Resident,
and Brevard Technical Journal. Note that Ben
Bova will be speaking at BCC on January 26. That
will be a good opportunity for us to coordinate
with BCC on our event for February 13.

4. Following near-term meetings are:

March 13, Cocoa Beach Library Room, chapter internal meeting
April 10, Titusville Public Library Room, speaker meeting
May 8, Shuttle’s Bar and Grill, chapter internal meeting

5. NASA 50th Anniversary in 2008

Our chapter hopes to participate in festivities
for KSC’s observances of NASA’s 50th
anniversary. There will also be an event to
start this off, called the World Space Expo, Nov 3-11, 2007.

6. International Space Development Conference 2009 Bid

Our chapter plans to place a bid to host the ISDC
2009 conference. We discussed theme ideas,
speakers, organizations and locations. Our
current thinking is to have it in Orlando, with a
theme of Space Tourism and Youth Activism. Jen
volunteered to write the final proposal. The
2006 conference was in LA. 2007 is in
Dallas. 2008 will be in DC. If we succeed,
we’ll host the event in Orlando in 2009.

7. Mailing List Upgrade - We discussed our new
Yahoo email list. Here is the site. If you wish
to continue to receive our meeting announcements
and minutes, go here to sign up.

8. Web Site Migration - Rick Fischer is planning
to take over our chapter web site. Thank you to
Bob Waterman for a superb job of creating and
maintaining our site up until now. We hope to
feature a continually updated local space events
calendar to draw visitors to our site.

9. Treasurer - Jen is moving ahead with getting
the treasury set up for our use.

10. Membership Brochures - We need a new supply
of the NSS membership brochures. We gave a box
of them away at the last Shuttle launch. We are
investigating ways of having them displayed locally in active locations.

11. Banner - We need to have a new banner
printed or find a way to repair our banner. The
printed artwork layer has separated from the
backing layer in several places due to being
stored rolled. It is useable until we find a solution.

12. Future Events:

January 26, Ben Bova at BCC
BREVARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE, (COCOA), FLA.
Renowned Sci-Fi writer Ben Bova will present the
free lecture “Man’s Place in Space,’’ on Friday,
Jan. 26, at 6 p.m., in the Brevard Community
College Planetarium and Observatory, Cocoa
Campus, 1519 Clearlake Road. The event is hosted
by the planetarium and the Space Coast Writers’
Guild. Bova’s recent novels, The Green Trap and
Titan, as well as his non-fiction book Faint
Echoes, Distant Stars, will be available for
purchase at the planetarium. A book signing will
follow the program. Bova’s presentation is part
of the Space Coast Writers’ Guild annual
conference on Friday and Saturday, January 26 and
27 at the Courtyard Marriott in Cocoa Beach. For
more information, call (321) 433-7372 or www.brevardcc.edu/planet.
