Dear NSS Florida Space Coast Members and Friends,

National Space Society Florida Space Coast Chapter
Minutes and Notes, Tuesday, February 13, 2007 Meeting

Time: 5:00

Location:
Paddy Cassidy’s
Cocoa Beach, FL

Attendees:

Fred Becker, Secretary
Robert Driscole, Sergeant At Arms
Jack Fox, President
Ross Tierney

Meeting called to order at 5:00 p.m.

MOST IMPORTANT ITEM: We need a few thousand NSS membership brochures
by March 10 for use at the KSC picnic.

1. The annual report to HQ has been filed, summarizing our 2006
activities. All chapters must also file for an individual employer
identification number as a non-profit entity.
Action: Fred to file with IRS for EIN.

2. Next event: KSC Annual Picnic: NSS Florida to promote NSS to
thousands of KSC employees and families.
Date: March 10.
Time: 10-4 (Setup Friday in advance)
Location: KARS Park.
Link: http://kscpicnic.ksc.nasa.gov/index.html

Jack is buying us a canopy to go with our table and chairs. We will
have our canopy set up near other organizations at the picnic. We’ll
be handing out Ad Astras and membership brochures. Jack also has 100
Astronaut Farmer mini-poster and kid activity books that we can hand
out. The picnic is providing a table and 3 chairs. We have Fred and
Robert available so far to help man the table. We need two more
volunteers. If you can participate, please let Jack know. We also
have a request in to NSS headquarters to send us 2000 membership
brochures for use here and in the future.

3. Monthly Members Meeting, March 13
Location: Paddy Cassidy’s
Time: 5:00 officers, 5:30 members and guests

4. Titusville Air Show, March 16-18. Fred contacted the airshow and
determined that their booths go for $400, but they would let us have
one for $200. Due to our other activities and the cost of this, we
are passing on this opportunity. Update: now that the Shuttle has
slipped to March, this is more feasible, however there are no more
booths available and no space for our canopy.

5. Yuri’s Night: NSS Florida to participate in worldwide space
celebration of the first space flight.
Date: April 12
Time: 6:00
Location: Paddy Cassidy’s Irish Pub, Cocoa Beach
Link: www.yurisnight.net/

Option 1: Titusville city event was discussed. We don’t know the
city fees for this. Spaceview Park in concert with Astronomy Club,
HAM club. Combine three popular draws: food, music and
sports. Bands: Max Q, local space folk singer. Astronaut signing.
Option 2: Paddy Cassidy’s. We decided to go with Option 2. Items
to bring and provide: stickers, T-shirts, CD’s, posters. Webcam and
internet access will link us to the online Yuri’s Night worldwide celebration.
Action: Add a link from our home page to Yuri’s Night (if not
already present).
Action: Ross will provide a model to be raffled with proceeds going
to our chapter fund.
Action: Ross to coordinate in-house fliers and posters for Yuri’s
Night. These are created by Paddy Cassidy’s.
Action: Ross to establish setup for wireless internet.
Action: Jack to donate $50 to buy items to auction for chapter
benefit. Possible items: gift certificate, something unique to KSC,
space related.
Action: Robert to do publicity in Florida Today and The Resident.
Action: Chapter to sponsor food for 30/35 people with a $50 budget.

6. STS-117 Launch: NSS Florida to promote NSS to hundreds of launch
viewers at Spaceview Park.
Date: April TBD. The date has slipped from the planned March 15 launch date.
Time: TBD
Location: Spaceview Park.
Action: request Ad Astras. Info: we currently have 1000 Ad Astras
for our use. Followup: We requested another 1000, plus membership brochures.

9. ISDC 2009: NSS Florida Space Coast to bid on 2009 International
Space Development Conference
Our chapter plans to place a bid to host the ISDC 2009
conference. We discussed theme ideas, speakers, organizations and
locations. Our current thinking is to have it in Orlando, with a
theme of Space Tourism and Youth Activism. The 2006 conference was
in LA. 2007 is in Dallas. 2008 will be in DC. If we succeed, we’ll
host the event in Orlando in 2009. Jen has written a preliminary
proposal. Fred has found a convention service company that can
arrange optimum rates.
Action: Fred to contact Brett Silcox with information about the
convention service company. Update: Fred has left a phone message
and will email the information.

10. NSS Membership brochures at KSCVC.
We are progressing with logistics and will soon have NSS membership
brochures available to all the visitors at the KSC Visitors Center.

15. Banner – We need to have a new banner printed or find a way to
repair our banner. The printed artwork layer has separated from the
backing layer in several places due to being stored rolled. It is
useable until we find a solution.
Action: Ross to coordinate this? Tim has the banner and Fred can
deliver to Ross. The banner is useable as is, but it would be good
to have it repaired in time for the March 10 picnic.

Dear NSS Florida Space Coast Members and Friends,

National Space Society Florida Space Coast Chapter
Minutes and Notes, Tuesday, January 9, 2007 Meeting

Time: 4:30

Location:
Shuttle’s Bar and Grill
Merritt Island, FL

Attendees:

Jen Bailey, Treasurer
Tim Bailey, VP
Fred Becker, Secretary
Brad Byron
Robert Driscole
Brian Lilley from Hershey, Pennsylvania

Meeting called to order at 4:50 p.m.

Agenda:

1. General topics discussion.

The meeting began with a general discussion of
current space events–the recent Shuttle mission,
upcoming space conferences and events in the
area, future launches, the recent news about
youth space interest levels, the Gemini 12 crew
reunion event in December at KSC.

2. Recap of December meeting at the STS-116 launch.

We had a successful activity in December with our
table at Space View Park in Titusville during the
launch attempt and subsequent night launch of
STS-116. We handed out about 400 copies of Ad
Astra and a comparable number of custom printed
inserts and NSS membership brochures. The
brochures were coded with our chapter code, so we
hope to later receive results from headquarters
as to the percentage of people that join NSS from
this event. Brett Sillcox from NSS headquarters
was able to visit us during the launch event and viewed the liftoff with us.

1.  Mailing List Upgrade

We discussed possible means of communicating easier and decided to convert this mini-mailing list to a Yahoo email list.  This way members can send announcements easier.  We can also store files, photos and links here.  We can invite other Florida chapters to join the list and a more effective cooperation between chapters can be achieved.  The list will be public so that NSS members can find it, but all members must be approved and only members can view messages or other members’ email addresses.  If you would like to join up at Yahoo, here is the information.  If you wish to remain on the existing list, we’ll email you that way as we have in the past.

1.  Space Shuttle STS-1 Crew Event at KSC Visitors Center To Feature NSS Table, April 7

We need volunteer support to provide NSS presence at a special gathering of famous astronauts John Young and Bob Crippen as they celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first Shuttle launch.  This will be held Friday, April 7.  We will have a table with volunteers, Ad Astra magazines, NSS literature, and NASA literature.  This will be running from 12:30 to 3:30.  If you can help, please let us know.  So far we have four volunteers.

2.  Space Walk of Fame Museum in Titusville to Close, But Not Until Hosting Yuri’s Night 2006 on April 12.

The Space Walk of Fame is being built in Titusville at Spaceview Park.  Similar to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, it features engraved plaques and monuments for the early space program.  The organization also has an educational role and has established a space museum.  Due to a large rental increase at their mall site, they will have to close the museum and put everything in storage.  They will need about 2000 square feet of climate controlled storage, and some secure storage.  They will close the museum section on May 28 or 29.  Then on June 14 or 15, the gift shop in front will close.  June 28 is when the location will be completely empty.  Meanwhile, they have these events in work:

- A Space Art contest for Brevard County students.

- A Project Gemini Reunion at the end of April.

We had a wide-ranging discussion of all matters related to historic preservation of the space program:  Air Force Space Museum, Orlando Museum and Science Center, BCC Planetarium, Astronaut Hall of Fame, Florida Space, KSC Visitors Center.

We will have our NSS Florida Space Coast Yuri’s Night and STS-1 celebration at the Space Walk of Fame on April 12.  This is the 45th anniversary of humanity’s first flight into space by Yuri Gagarin, and the 25th anniversary of the launch of the world’s first reusable spaceship.  A local radio station will be broadcasting from the museum that evening.  We are also hoping to get an invitation out to all Brevard county high schools.  We are working now on publicity for the event.

1. Pluto Launch Public Viewing Event With LISATS

We had a successful event hosting a table at the LISATS viewing site for the launch of Pluto New Horizons. Thanks to NSS headquarters, we had a good supply of Ad Astras to give out to the public. We also created some membership brochures. LISATS appreciated our presence and we hope to grow this activity for future launches. We had the table up both days, January 17 and 18. Here is the link to LISATS:

2. Space Walk of Fame Museum in Titusville to Close. NSS to meet there Feb 28.

They will close in April or May. Currently they are hoping to work out an arrangement that will have them moving to a new location. If that does not work out, then the museum will indeed go into storage. They can use help with keeping the word out there for their primary task of completing the Space Walk of Fame. The Project Gemini monument is the next part to be put up there. They can use ideas for the museum too. Meanwhile, they have these events in work:

- A Space Art contest for Brevard County students.

- A Project Gemini Reunion at the end of April.

We will have a follow up chapter meeting at the SWOF on Tuesday, February 28, at 5:30. Everyone is invited to come and see what it is all about and celebrate what they have accomplished so far.

3. Space Shuttle STS-1 Crew Event at KSC Visitors Center To Feature NSS Table, April 7

We are invited to have an NSS presence at a special gathering of famous astronauts John Young and Bob Crippen as they celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first Shuttle launch. This will be held Friday, April 7, . We will have a table with volunteers, Ad Astra magazines, NSS literature, and NASA literature. We will require a lot of literature for this so pre-staging of all this will require a lot of help. We will get a crowd estimate in order to be ready to support. We have: a table, and about 50 remaining Ad Astras. We will need:

NSS shirts for the volunteers

NSS caps for the volunteers

A banner for the table

NSS membership brochures

Ad Astra magazines

NASA literature on STS-1, crew photos

Idea: create a logo or pin to jointly celebrate STS-1 and Yuri Gagarin’s flight, both of which occurred on April 12 Volunteers for the table and event

Prior meeting topics.

1. Space Spring Break

An initiative for a nationwide campaign for a Space Spring Break for students is on the agenda for a possible future project. The concept is to hold an educational and fun event for students.

2. Zero-G Flight Educational Outreach

Another possible future project may be for our chapter to raise funds to sponsor a local educator to fly weightless on the Zero-G Corporation vehicle.

3. Action: Someone to author the “NSS Space Coast Guide to NASA Launch Viewing.” It turns out that Robert Osband from LISATS has already compiled a web site that is along these same lines: This will not be ready for the next launch.
